What does your education say to a recruiter?

March 21st, 2009

Your education can say several things about you to your perspective recruiter. It’s a thorny issue and one that needs to be skirted with care because pride can be easily bruised.

  • A college degree could tell someone that you have the persistence to take on a long and difficult project and finish it out.  An assessment like this could be true or could be partially true, but what is undeniable is that anyone with a degree has a passion for self betterment and learning.
  • A college degree could tell someone that you seek to challenge yourself.
  • A degree obtained in night school can tell a potential employer that you are willing to go above and beyond.
Certifications tell employers that you are focused and serious about your career and take every opportunity to improve yourself.
  • Higher degrees such as Master’s and Ph.D’s tell recruiters that you have specialized knowledge and work hard to attain any additional knowledge that may be offered.
Education can prove to be critical in a slumping job market

Interview Question #1: How much money do you want to make?

March 11th, 2009

Depending on the circumstance your answer could vary significantly. From the point of view of a technical recruiter, you need to know ahead of time what you are worth and what you are looking to make. A technical recruiter needs to know this information upfront because it allows him to gauge whether the candidate will accept the job or not. If the desired salary is $150,000 and the company is only looking to pay $120,000 there will be issues.

Don’t think that if a company interviews you and falls in love that they will cough up the extra $30,000 dollars. Very likely they will try to come up as much as possible, but only to a certain point. This is why it is best to know what the company is looking to pay and what is the least amount of money you are willing to work for because it will save you and the company a lot of time and effort.

Recruiting takes time and effort and for a potential hire to be blown up because salary was mis-communicated is a waste of time and money.

So you should give the recruiter or HR an acceptable range and be prepared to get an offer on the low side of your range. You may then negotiate the salary, but be careful not to make it look as though you are greedy or ungrateful.  In this economy that is the last thing you want the company to think of you.

Company Research: The Secret to Successful Interviewing

March 4th, 2009

Article Title: Company Research: The Secret to Successful Interviewing
Author Byline: Mary Gormandy White, M.A., SPHR
Author Website: MobileTechWebsite,
One of the most important things you can do to prepare for a job interview is to learn everything that you can about the company before you go to the interview. Most interviewers ask job candidates why the want the job. Most people answer this question specifically in terms of their own skills, and why their skills are a good match for the essential functions of the job.

Having the right skills certainly is an important part of being qualified for a particular job. However, since employers screen resumes or applications before deciding who to interview, it is likely that the interviewer is already familiar with whether or not your skills are a good match for the position.

Telling the interviewer what skills you have only lets the interviewer know that you are interested in the type of job that is open, but doesn’t say anything about why you want to work for the company.

If you have conducted research about the company ahead of time, you can use this question to really want to set yourself apart from the other candidates. When you know specific information about the company, you can answer the interviewer’s question about why you want the job in terms that are customized for this interview.

When you know the company’s mission and general information about its products and services, it becomes much easier to convey a genuine desire for this particular job with this specific organization.

Interviewers want to hire people who are likely to stay with the company long-term, so they look favorably on candidates who seem genuinely interested in and knowledgeable about the organization as well as the type of job. The few minutes you spend browsing the Internet to find out about the company are well worth the benefits of making a positive impression on the interviewer.

Bad Recruiting - What NOT to say to a Candidate

February 13th, 2009

My buddy just called me up to complain about a recruiter who called him today about a job opportunity.

Apparently the recruiter had picked up his name on Monster and had called him to Inquire about his job search. He told the recruiter that while he was content to be where he was he was also open to new possibilities. The recruiter then proceeded to berate my friend about having his resume on Monster and not really looking for a job and wasting her time.

Say what??!!

This is an example of horrific recruiting and the recruiters who do this give the whole industry a black eye. My buddy is the kind of candidate that you want to nurture and lure out of his happy seat. Not only will he never work with this recruiter again, but he will probably avoid the agency altogether.

The recruiter who asks a candidate why the candidate is wasting her time needs to seriously assess her career in the recruiting industry and consider something perhaps less stressful and people oriented.

If you do not hold the best interest of your client and candidate as the guiding principle of your recruiting strategy, you are doing everyone, including yourself, a disservice.
