What is Your Post College Job Search Plan?

April 24th, 2009

Article Title: What is Your Post College Job Search Plan?
Author Byline: CareerAlley
Author Website: CareerAlley

If you’ve not done so already, you need to come up with your Job Search plan. If you are a College Senior, you should have this in place already (and be active in your search). If you have not yet made a plan, why not start now? Previous posts on this site cover the major points of a plan (two of which are):

Today’s College related links follow below.

  • AfterCollege - “Find the Job you want” is this site’s tag line. The site has a very clean interface on it’s main page and suggests a very simple approach: Find your school, join your network, Access exclusive jobs/events OR quickly search over 200,000 jobs (sounds like a lot to me). From the main page you can set-up an account and profile, find your school, search for jobs (with very flexible search parameters), or do a quick search. The page lists featured career networks, featured employers and “browse popular jobs”. A quick search returned over 100,000 jobs, 93 intern jobs and 136 co-op jobs.
  • JobDoggy - An interesting name (not sure how it ties to site’s focus), the site’s tag line is “Part-time jobs for teens, college students, and high school students”. The main page offers job search, job articles, “how it works” and an FAQ. The resources section is split between College Students and High School Students/Teens with job search, part-time jobs and seasonal jobs. Clicking on these links provides a wide range of additional resources.
  • SummerJobs - It may sound a bit early for Summer jobs, but it’s not. Absent Intern positions, a summer job looks good on your resume (employers will ask what you did with your summers). The site has featured employers and a quick search function on the main page (there were over 500 jobs when I checked). You can register on the site and have access to additional tools. The jobs range from camp counselors to cartooning instructors. Take a look.
  • Crossroads - This is The Association for Computing Machinery, Inc’s student magazine. The main page offers a vast listing of company links to Co-op and Intern programs (too many to list here). There is also a careers page which offers additional resources.

Good luck in your search.

Resume Tip #27: Cover Letter

April 18th, 2009

There is a debate about cover letters. Personally, when I am very interested in a company, I write a short 2 to 3 paragraph email or letter. Many recruiters don’t read cover letters at all.

If you are going to write one, make sure you tailor it to the company and offer some knowledge of a problem or a product that you can help improve. Do not send the same cover letter to every company. It’s lame and we figure it out and into the wastebasket it goes.

Resume Tip #25: Job Board Tricks

April 16th, 2009

Have several different resumes ready and cycle through them. Cycling refreshes the resumes in the system and brings them up higher in searches. Try out different keyword combinations, structures, and content to determine what resume gives you the most hits.

Do not leave your resume unattended for longer than a few days at a time when there are millions of people looking for work.

Resume Tip #23: Activities/ Hobbies/Interests

April 14th, 2009

This section can help the manager relate to you and at the same time it could lead right into the waste basket. Don’t write anything weird here.

It is always last and can be left out altogether.

Resume Tip #21: Education

April 12th, 2009

Highest degree to lowest:
• Ph.D.
• Masters
• BS/BA

Do not list your high school. Having no higher education is like having no education at all if you are in the high tech so why waste space? They will ask anyhow.

The education section could be positioned before the experience section especially for recent grads. Remember.

You do not need to say when you graduated from college. If you are over 40, don’t assume that the law protects you, take precautions yourself.

Resume Tip #20: Professional Experience/Work Experience/ Experience

April 11th, 2009

This is the body of the resume. No matter how short or long you decide to make the body, make sure it is technical and filled with keywords you put in the technical summary. It is very frustrating to have to figure out when your candidate did something and often causes resumes to be discarded. </br>

There is an endless debate about how long a resume should be. I don’t agree with the one page idea because a good technical person cannot fit all his experience on one page. If you are just starting out then a one pager is good. However, if you have experience and you cat out significant keyword portions you risk being overlooked. </br>

Resume Tip #19: Technical Summary/ Skills Summary

April 10th, 2009

This is a good place to put all the keywords that appear in your resume. Search engines will find your resume faster if there are more specific keywords in it.  Depending on your line of work and experience your summary will be longer or shorter. This is where you should use a table for organization. </br>

For Example:</br>

Technical Skills
Platforms:     Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, VxWorks
Languages:  C, C++, Java, HTML, XML, Intel/MIPS assembly, VB, Perl, SQL
Software:  Tornado 2.0 tools, GNU toolkit, Microsoft Visual Studio, Install shield,                                      Agere Simulator, MYSQL, MS Office suites, MS VISIO, DDK, SDK,  CVS, PVCS, BUGZILLA
Hardware:  Intel 80×86 Processors, MIPS RM7000 processor</br>

If you have only been exposed to something and you cannot support it in your resume, you may put it the technical summary, but makes sure it is supported in the body of your resume. Recruiters cannot tell where and how much you have used a tool off this summary, so be sure to tell them.</br>

Resume Tip #18: Summary/Objective

April 9th, 2009

Unless your resume is all over the place and you feel the recruiter or hiring manager will have no idea why you even sent your resume to him, do not have an objective; most of the time it’s pretty obvious that if you are applying for a Java Developer position you want to be a Java Developer and not a Business Analyst. If the recruiter does not realize this, you have bigger problems.

A Summary is just that: a short 3-4 bullet point about your best qualifications for a specific job. This is the hook.

For Example:

Summary
• Entrepreneurial, ambitious team player with 5+ years of work experience in Sales, Account Management, and Recruiting while developing relationships with clients and candidates.
• Extensive experience with Web 2.0 social networking communities, SEO, and in thinking about how IT solves business problems.
• Solid understanding of information technology supported by a MS degree in Computer Information Systems and practical web development experience.

This is a good summary of what you will find in my resume.

Resume Tip #13: Resume Length and Age Discrimination

April 4th, 2009

Sometimes experience can be your worst enemy. While it is illegal to discriminate against workers over 40, age discrimination is still rampant. One way to protect yourself is to limit your resume to the last 10-15 years of your experience. Cut everything else out and don’t give dates for your education. Recruiters are trained not to ask how old someone is because while technically a legal interview question, if the candidate is over 40 this kind of questioning could later lead to a discrimination filing if the candidate believes his age was a factor.
