Resume Tip #21: Education

April 12th, 2009

Highest degree to lowest:
• Ph.D.
• Masters
• BS/BA

Do not list your high school. Having no higher education is like having no education at all if you are in the high tech so why waste space? They will ask anyhow.

The education section could be positioned before the experience section especially for recent grads. Remember.

You do not need to say when you graduated from college. If you are over 40, don’t assume that the law protects you, take precautions yourself.

Resume Tip #15: Your Resume is a Tool

April 6th, 2009

You would not use a blow torch to light a candle, would you? The same goes for a resume. Your resume is a tool that needs to be adjusted, within limits, to the jobs you are applying for. Do not lie about what you can do, but if a position calls for a Business Analyst and you are a Project Manager and you submit your resume as a project manager, you will not hear back from the company.

Many PM’s do BA work and vice versa so adjusting certain aspects of the resume to fit the job description would not change the content of your skill set, whereas it would increase your chances to get the interview.

Resume Tip #10: Artsy Style Formatting

April 1st, 2009

Unless you are a graphic designer, do not attempt to create a masterpiece out of your work experiences. Even graphic artists should have a normal chronological resume and a web based portfolio.

Resume Tip #7: Say No to Italics

March 29th, 2009

Every resume with Italics that I receive get’s formatted. Italics is more difficult to read. If you want to make a special point isolate that point in a separate section of the resume or within the responsibilities section.

Resume Tip #6: Use Bullets

March 28th, 2009

Recruiters do not like to read prose. But we like reading bulleted resumes where every bullet is short and to the point. Don’t make us work too hard.

Resume Tip #5: Be Technical!

March 27th, 2009

Technical resumes should have a lot of technical jargon. If a recruiter tells you a resume is too technical, change recruiters. Technical jargon creates good keywords that specialty recruiters will find heartwarming. A well written technical resume “lights up” in a search if proper keywords are used. This is more effective than buying expensive color codes from Dice or Monster.

Resume Tip #4: Numbers

March 26th, 2009

Sales or recruiting resumes should have numbers. Any job where you had numerical goals and you attained those goals you should include. Don’t be too modest! Your competition won’t be.

Submit Resume and Never Hear Back – Passive Job Searching

March 22nd, 2009

Many people are searching for the answer as to why they don’t get a call back after submitting a resume. The answer is simple:

“Follow up”

When I post a job, I usually receive several dozen resumes, but I only call 1 or 2. This is because most people are not a fit. If you want the job, call the HR recruiter and find out why you haven’t heard back about your resume. Sometimes you will not get a straight answer, but if you happen on a good recruiter he may give you a mountain of useful information and even an interview.

Recruiters need your resume to align to the job description to a Tee or they will not be able to sell you to the hiring manager. If you want a call back, make sure your resume is clear as to why you are a good fit. This should NOT be in the cover letter, although if you want to write that there as well it won’t hurt; this information must be in the resume. It must be crystal clear to the recruiter what you can do not from your objective, but from the actual job responsibilities.

If you area applying for an Business Systems Analyst role and all your titles are Financial Business Analyst, you may not get a call back.

Don’t be shy, follow up!

Using Social Media to Find Great Candidates

March 21st, 2009

Article Title: Using Social Media to Find Great Candidates
Author Byline: AG Communications Group
Author Website: AG Communications Group

Are you still using the big job boards to find potential employees? How is that working for you?

While some passive job seekers have anonymous CVs and resumes uploaded on Internet job sites the majority of talented people passively seeking a better job do not.
In addition to purchasing geographically targeted web banners and buttons social media websites provide a great platform for reaching these candidates. Let’s take a look at a few:

Facebook

Facebook has a section for jobs listings and give users the option of sending job ads it to friends or posting them to your Facebook profile.

Linkedin

Linkedin lists the companies that are in your network, the number of people who have viewed your profile, and the how many times your profile has showed up in search results.

XING

XING’s marketplace shows offers that match your profile, let you see who you know at the company and has a button to recommend the job to friends.

Jobshouts

Jobshouts is a newly launched free job board that uses Twitter, the popular micro-blogging tool, to announce new job listings.

These are just a few examples of how social media is changing the search for job candidates as well as the search for jobs. A multi-pronged approach will prove to be the most effective way to attract top talent.

Posting Salary Expectations on Job Boards – Big Mistake

March 20th, 2009

You should never post your salary expectations anywhere. Most major job boards ask you what you are looking for and most give you the option not to say or to say “negotiable”. Never say what you are looking to make.

The reasoning for this is that a recruiter is thinking of a number. If you are too high above that number he will disqualify you based on salary. If you are too low, he may question how well you understand the market and know your worth. He may also doubt how good you are.

A very low salary for a very experienced professional is a red flag. It also places you at a negotiating disadvantage especially in contract rate negotiations. Permanent recruiters will probably try to get you to ask for the highest salary because this way it becomes a win-win situation. On the other hand, the more a recruiter can push you down on a contract, the bigger margin he can take from the client.

It’s a dog-eat-dog world whether we are working in a recession or the boom times. Never give away your hand first.  Make the recruiter quote you first and go from there.
