July 2013 - Looking Back at the American Disaster in Afghanistan

December 2nd, 2009

Kabul, Afghanistan – July 2013. Taliban Forces have reoccupied much of southern Afghanistan as the shattered Northern Alliance retreated to the North. Sharia Law is in full effect as the Talibs have perfected their methods of subjugating women and torturing anyone who will not conform. Government troops that had been trained by the US Special Forces have now taken sides of either the Taliban or the various warlords. Al Qaida is constructing terrorist training camps all over the countryside and has found a fertile ground for recruiting amongst the ranks of the collapsed federal Army. The US military has effectively turned the Pakistan-Afghan border into a bombing range for Predators and other top secret military hardware while hunting down terrorists.

This scenario may happen sooner or it may happen later, but without a doubt this or something like this will take place shortly after the US withdraws from Afghanistan.

As I watched President Obama announce the deployment of an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, I could not but shudder at the thought of the shattered lives that this foolish move will create. 100,000 troops is what the Russians had deployed in Afghanistan and that changed not a thing.

I have had the pleasure of meeting many of the young men and women who serve to protect us from all enemies foreign and domestic. Everyone joined for their own reason, but each one was willing to put his or her life on the line to defend the United States. It is a crime that our government cynically and without regard to their lives uses the military that defends our freedom in a careless manner.

But why am I convinced that not even a million troops will change the outcome of this? Because unlike most of my American friends, I was born in the USSR and my parents saw the horrors of the Soviet-Afgan War.

The attitude that we cannot win a ground war in Afghanistan is not defeatism or pessimism; it is simply a historical observation. Over the last millennia, no one has ever achieved any kind of military superiority or domination over Afghanistan for any prolonged period of time. We have spent 9 years and have had very limited results. Unless we annex Afghanistan and station a permanent garrison there of 250,000 troops we will hardly have a chance at accomplishing our goals.

What are our goals there?

· Capture Bin Laden?

o Even if we capture and kill Bin Laden he will only become a more powerful Martyr in the eyes of the Islamists. We should still hunt him like the scum that his is and eliminate him with one of those 50k lb bombs, buts its hardly worth sending 80k troops after him. I would also not want him on trial in the US, he does not deserve the protection of our justice system. Right to the wall!

· Destroy the Talban?

o A pipe dream. The Taliban is a permanent fixture of the Afghan political spectrum and will likely take over as soon as the last American leaves.

· Bring peace and stability to the Afghan people?

o Only someone with a truly delusional sense of grandeur and inflated self worth can think hat we can do this short of annexing Afghanistan. And that is something is so farfetched it almost as farfetched as a victory in Afghanistan.

· Build schools and instill a love for freedom and democracy?

o The Russians already did this 20 years ago and with excellent results. They already love freedom, but not the same way we define freedom. They hate occupiers( US, Russians, British, French). They will hate us more and more with every passing day we occupy their country.

Not 1 American life is worth any of these goals.

Why?

They hate us. Not for all the glorious rhetoric of President Obama, not for all the hearts and minds, not for all the schools we build, Afghans want us out, and when we are out, they will decide how to live in their freedom. And I can bet my rather expensive education that it will not be anything like what we envision for them.

What kind of a spineless bastard would you have to be to threaten a 90 year old recipient of the Medal of Honor with legal actions for raising the American flag?

December 2nd, 2009

“As part of the Italian Campaign, Barfoot participated in a series of amphibious landings: the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943, the invasion of mainland Italy at Salerno in September, and finally thelandings at Anzio in late January 1944. His unit pushed inland from Anzio, and by May 1944 had reached the town of Carano. There they set up defensive positions and, for several weeks, Barfoot conducted patrols to scout the German lines. When his company was ordered to attack on the morning of May 23, Barfoot, now a technical sergeant, asked for permission to lead a squad. Because of the patrols he had conducted, he knew the layout of the terrain and the minefield which lay in front of the German position. He advanced alone through the minefield, following ditches and depressions, until he came within a few yards of a machine gun on the German flank. After destroying the gun with a hand grenade, he entered the German trench and advanced on a second machine gun, killing two soldiers and capturing three others. When he reached a third gun, the entire crew surrendered. After clearing the area, Barfoot had captured a total of seventeen German soldiers.[1]

When the Germans launched an armored counterattack later in the day, Barfoot disabled one tank with a bazooka, advanced into enemy-held territory, and destroyed an abandoned German artillery piece. He then returned to his own lines and helped two wounded soldiers from his squad to the rear.[1]”  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_T._Barfoot

Is it a Christmas Party or a Holiday Party? Are you Offended Yet?

November 27th, 2009

There are some pathetic people out there who try to find things to be offended about. These people think that a Christmas Tree should be a Holiday Tree and that a Christmas Party should be a Holiday Party. What hogwash!

In Soviet Russia the Christmas tree was actually a New Year’s Tree and Santa was Grandpa Frost. These people who are looking for something to be offended at are pathetic excuses for individuals. Being afraid to offend someone of a different creed has gone full circle to where diversity is actually become a sort of bland, insane dogma where everyone is discouraged from celebrating their heritage.

People are so bored they cannot leave their neighbors alone. Live and Let Live!

Google Has Nothing to Apologize About to Michelle Obama

November 25th, 2009

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/11/25/google.michelle.obama.controversy-2/index.html

It’s sad how few people understand how search engines work. If a nasty image shows up first in a search for a key word it is not because Google placed it there. The reason is that someone took the time to optimize the image to that it is the most easily searchable image on the internet.

It has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with censorship. Google should not only not apologize for the search result; they should do nothing about it. This is not China.

Any bleeding heart liberals who argue that this is Google’s fault have no idea about search engine optimization and are traversing a slippery slope that leads to a China like repression of speech.

Prosecutorial Misconduct or Outright Treason against NAVY SEALS?

November 24th, 2009

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,576646,00.html?test=latestnews

The story focuses on 3 NAVY SEALS commandoes who went through fire and high water to capture one of the scumbags who masterminded the butchery of the Blackwaters security guards. I don’t have much love for private military contractors who drive around warzones in unarmored jeeps, but they were American citizens and the gruesome display that the terrorists mounted on that bridge deserved a response.

The SEALS went in undercover and captured the animal who masterminded the display. They did what I believe is the essence of how the war on terrorism should be fought: clandestinely. They did everything by the book only somehow this scumbag happened to get a bloody lip and told the interrogators that the SEALS assaulted him.

Are you serious? He’ should have been executed on the spot.

I have little tolerance for giving terrorists the same due process that is often denied US Citizens based on their monetary ability. Only US citizens should have their rights protected by the US Constitution. This would seem to be a natural truth, but it is somehow lost on many liberals.

Prosecuting the NAVY SEALS send the wrong message to all the other SEAL teams in combat: do you job and the US will not stand behind you. Lucky for us the SEALS will do their job with deadly efficiency regardless of our governments support. The officer who is pressing these charges needs to take a good look in the mirror and recognize the real enemy.

Business Process Re Engineering Suggestions for a Boston Staffing Agency

November 17th, 2009

There are several identifiable processes that need to be implemented.

1. Global Strategy

Team breaks into new clients and procures outsourcing, staffing, and off-shoring opportunities. We are should also be interested in ANY IT related initiative within the company no matter how large or small, perm or contract. Every opportunity to build a relationship with the client must be exploited.

2. Marketing

We are a global IT Consulting Company with solid capability in India to carry out complicated outsourcing and off shoring projects. Our value added proposition in the USA is that we have project experience and can help a client out of a tough technical situation by providing instant expertise that resides within our consulting company.

3. Sales

The role of sales is to generate leads through research and cold calling and to close those leads through strategic relationship building. 80-85% of all leads should come from the sales team themselves and augmented by the recruiting only slightly.

4. Recruiting

The role of recruiting is to build a network of qualifies professionals through systematic calling of candidates to introduce the staffing agency and present opportunities with the company. If there are no opportunities, recruiting should either continue to build the database by calling everyone or merge into the sales role.

Recruiters should attempt to get leads, but this should not be their primary function in the company.

What can we do in the next 3 months to improve performance?

1. Assign sales territories to everyone. Engage everyone on the sales team

2. Hammer the phones calling every company in the Boston area marketing the company. Approach the sale as a partner, not as another boring agency. How can we help you in your business rather than do you have a req open.”

3. Expand to taking perm reqs until we have more contract then we can handle.

4. Take all reqs not limiting to app dev.

5. Require productivity reports from EVERYONE, daily at first, then weekly.

6. Morning meetings at 9:00 sharp, everyone. Friday Afternoon meetings to recap progress and set goals for next week.

7. Discuss with India ways to collaborate more closely, possibly import a Solutions Architect on an L3 to go out with the sales team.

8. Sell Solutions rather than one offs.

9. Require team to learn the technology by giving him home work assignments that count towards a bonus.

10. At the end of 3 months, conduct comprehensive review and readjust payroll accordingly.

Note:

I think the whole approach of “I represent a global IT consulting company specializing in contract consultants” is boring… it’s awful. I would change it to sell our outsourcing and off-shoring expertise and develop the conversation rather than getting a “no” and hanging up. But for that the sales guy has to understand what issues the company may be having and talk about possible solutions.

I’d also be interested in some R&D into some process or product we can develop. Being a staffing company is nice, but I know we want more than that.
