My hat goes off to military recruiters who are probably the hardest working recruiters in America. No one else has such a critical mission and at the same time such a difficult sell as to Army recruiters, Navy recruiters, and Air Force recruiters.
In time of peace and prosperity, military recruiting become more difficult as more young people look to college and to other careers that do not place them in harm’s way. But even in times of peace there are those who sign up because they have literally no other choice.
“Mama told Johnny not to go down to town,
Marin’ recruiter was hanging around”
-Marine PT Cadence
Military recruiters get a bad reputation for hanging around high schools and colleges attempting to recruit young people. It’s a thankless job building the military force to defend our freedom.
When the economy turns sour more people are interested despite the obvious likelihood of getting shipped overseas. The destination will be Iraq or Afghanistan or any number of countries around the world where US operates in a military or advisory manner. I would say that the likelihood of going if you are in a combat MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) is 100%.
For some people, the discipline, leadership, and team work the military teaches could become invaluable tools in building a successful educational and professional life path. The decision must not be taken lightly since one very visible outcome of signing the contract is coming home in a body bag. But for many, the risk of leading a broken and unfulfilled life far outweighs the honor and lessons that the military bestows on soldiers.
And this journey begins with the military recruiter.
